Storolf bone needle

"Storolf" is a replica of a Viking bone needle from the 11th century, based on an original find from Trondheim in Norway. It is hand carved and elaborately decorated in "Urne" style. Bone needles like these can be found throughout the Viking settlements, at sites such as Birka, Haitabhu, Trondheim and York. Needles such as "Storolf" served to close cloaks and were used as hairpins. Through the small hole in the needle, a thread could be pulled to use for repairing fishing nets.
