This helmet was built according to an italo-normannic antetype. Its characteristics are the curved nasal and the counter swing in the upper part of the helm that resembles a phrygian hat. It has got a cotton covered foam padding on the inside and two leather straps to make it fit tightly to the head.

It as relatively easy to make, and production was even possible in larger quanitities without great effort. This made it very popular with a variety of warlike peoples. Typical for a spangenhelm is the head strip, which forms the base for the head plates. Oftentimes, this metal headband was aditionally adorned or reinforced. Archeological finds often indicate brow ornaments or other embellishments. The helmet's conical shape formed when the individual plates were rivited together. In many cases, chainmail mesh was added to the back part of the helmet. A solution for head protection that is as simple as it is clever.
