Il "salletto" è il successore del "cappello d' arme" e diventerà uno degli elmi più comuni in Europa nel 15° secolo. Ne esistono di tipi con visiera e senza, con protezione per il collo segmentata e rigida. La celata "Franz" non ha visiera per non coprire il viso e permettere facile respirazione e facile visibilità. I bordi e la cresta hanno una silhouette arrotondata.
All' interno è imbottito in spugna rivestita in cotone ed è munito di cinghiolo per allacciarlo saldamente alla testa.
Si consiglia l' utilizzo di un' infula imbottita.
