Savant stratège, formidable combattant, il menait ses troupes avec vigueur et discipline. Toutefois, la carrière du militaire arrivait à sa fin : son bras était moins vif, et malgré son esprit toujours aussi redoutable, il n'avait plus la vigueur nécessaire pour partir en campagne. Pour ses services rendus, l'empereur s'assura que le général ne tomberait jamais dans l'oubli.
